From Conflict to Eternal Rest: The Inspiring Testimony of Pastor Sushil Bhatta’s Struggle and Triumphant Faith

Life has a way of unfolding in directions we can neither predict nor imagine. The life of Pastor Sushil Bhatta is a living testament to this truth. Born into a respected, traditional Brahmin family in the remote hilly village of Bhatana (Ward No. 9, Surjangal) in Baitadi, Far-West Nepal, Sushil’s childhood was deeply rooted in rural simplicity. His days were spent traversing green pastures, attending the local school, and tending livestock. Supported by the pension of his father, Balaram Bhatta—a retired Indian Army veteran—and the tireless farming of his mother, Nirmala Devi Bhatta, the family lived a peaceful and comfortable life.
However, the shadow of a brutal civil conflict soon tore through their world, scattering the family and leaving deep emotional and physical scars that remain fresh even two decades later.
Shadows of War: Persecution, Legal Battles, and Forced Displacement
Sushil’s parents were known in the community for their kindness, offering financial help and emotional support to their neighbors. They had no enemies. Yet, as the flames of the armed conflict engulfed the nation, local individuals turned into political insurgents and targeted their own neighbors.
Suddenly, a devastating day changed everything. His father, Balaram Bhatta, was brutally assaulted by insurgents. Both his parents sustained severe injuries. Due to the critical nature of his wounds, his father had to flee to India for emergency medical treatment, where Sushil’s elder brother was already studying.
Sushil returned to the village to manage their remaining property, only to be met with a life-threatening assault by the same armed cadres. With survival as their sole priority, the Bhatta family was forced to abandon everything. They left behind their milking cows, livestock, fertile fields, and ancestral home, fleeing with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
In the years that followed, the family knocked on every door for justice—from the District Administration Office to the National Human Rights Commission. Regrettably, despite more than twenty years of legal pursuit, justice remains elusive. Today, their ancestral house lies in ruins, their lands remain barren, and the village they once called home offers no safe return.
Finding Ultimate Peace Amidst Chaos: The Power of Matthew 11:28
The sudden loss of their livelihood, property, and security left young Sushil trapped in deep despair and inner turmoil. It was during this dark period, around 2001 (2058 B.S.) as he was completing high school, that a gospel tract titled The Path to Eternal Life”* found its way into his hands.
As he read the pages, he encountered the message of Jesus Christ. One particular verse from the Bible, **Matthew 11:28**, pierced through his grief:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
These words acted as a divine balm for his wounded soul. In January 2002 (Magh 2058 B.S.), Sushil stepped into the Nayagaun Church in Pokhara for the very first time. There, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord, sealing his faith through water baptism. He was mentored by foundational leaders of the Nepal Evangelistic Center (M.S. Rana Ministry), including Resham Raj Poudel, Purna Kasta, Deepak Khadka, Narayan Shrestha, and Raju Adhikari. Their spiritual guidance completely transformed his life and vision.
Chapters of Ministry: Building Foundations and Empowering the Next Generation
Though stripped of his earthly inheritance, Pastor Sushil grew stronger in his spiritual calling. His dedication led him through several critical milestones in Christian ministry, with a deep focus on grassroots mobilization, church planting, and youth empowerment:
First Chapter (Nepal Evangelistic Center):The cradle where his spiritual foundation and theological roots were formed.
Second Chapter (Calvary Church, Dhangadhi):He pioneered the gospel movement in the Far-West region, establishing two vibrant churches in Dhangadhi and Attariya, Kailali.
Third Chapter (Discipleship Training Center – DTC/NTC):Moving to Kathmandu, he underwent intensive spiritual and leadership training to equip himself for national ministry.
Fourth Chapter (Empowering Youth & Pioneering Missions):Expanding his horizon to youth development and leadership, he served dynamically as the Executive Secretary of Arise and Shine Nepal, guiding and mentoring the younger generation toward spiritual revival and social responsibility. Driven by a vision for global missions, he also became the **Founder and President of Good News Mission**, laying structural frameworks for widespread evangelism.
Fifth Chapter (Partnership with NCFN & NCS): Collaborating at a national level with leaders from Nepal’s two major umbrella bodies—the National Christian Fellowship Nepal (NCFN) and the Nepal Christian Society (NCS)—he expanded church-planting initiatives across the country.
Sixth Chapter (Believers Church & Nazarene Ministries): He assumed key leadership roles and gained deep operational experience working with prestigious Christian organizations, including Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and Awana Clubs.
Seventh Chapter (Ideal Community Church): He became the founding Pastor of the “Ideal Community Church” in Kathmandu, serving as its dedicated spiritual shepherd.
Throughout this journey, Pastor Sushil personally baptized over 200 believers and traveled to more than 250 remote villages to screen the ‘Jesus Film’ (Movie of Hope), bringing light to dark corners of the country.Social Transformation, National Leadership, and Heart-Centered Advocacy
Pastor Sushil’s ministry was never confined within the four walls of a church. During times of national crisis, he stepped up to lead major humanitarian efforts in partnership with NCFN and NCS leaders. His deep empathy also led him to collaborate with **Heart to Heart International**, an organization dedicated to building bridges of emotional and spiritual understanding, listening closely to the deep-seated burdens of people’s hearts and providing true comfort.
National Leadership and FNCCN: “Healthy Family, Healthy Church”
Realizing the growing legal hurdles and religious persecution faced by the Christian community in Nepal, Pastor Sushil stepped into national leadership. He became the Founding President and General Secretary of the Federation of National Christian Churches of Nepal (FNCCN).
During his influential tenure as General Secretary, he forged deep relational bonds with leaders, pastors, and communities across the nation. He traveled extensively, conducting historic Revival Conferences and structural workshops. At the core of his national campaign was a definitive, transformational motto:
Healthy Family, Healthy Church”
Pastor Sushil firmly believed that a strong, spiritually vibrant nation could only be built on the foundation of healthy, loving families, which in turn cultivate healthy, resilient churches. Through this vision, he boldly advocated for the rights and religious freedom of churches before state authorities while strengthening the internal pastoral health of local congregations.
A Beacon of Hope in Far-West Nepal and Family Restoration
Through Pastor Sushil’s prayers and faithful service, many experienced miraculous healings, and countless individuals found hope and eternal life in Christ. Many of those he mentored are now serving successfully as pastors, powerful evangelists, and Bible school teachers across Nepal. Today, he is widely recognized as an influential, dynamic leader and a beacon of hope for the gospel movement in Far-West Nepal.
His spiritual journey also brought a beautiful restoration to his own family. Initially, his elder brother strongly opposed his faith due to social and religious pressure. However, through persistent prayer and unconditional love, his brother’s heart was transformed.
Today, the entire Bhatta family stands united in faith. In a beautiful turn of events, his elder brother now serves as the Senior Pastor of Milap Church* in Attariya, Kailali, leading a powerful full-time ministry.
A New Horizon: Launching Ministry in South Korea
The unresolved trauma of past conflict, continuous religious scrutiny, and the security challenges that came with high-profile national leadership eventually created a situation where Pastor Sushil had to step away from his homeland temporarily. Amidst these turbulent winds, he transitioned to South Korea.
True to his calling, relocation did not stop his mission. Upon arriving in South Korea, he immediately identified the spiritual needs of the diaspora community and planted a new church for Nepali-speaking believers. He now spends his days reaching out to Nepali migrant workers, offering spiritual counseling, mental health support, and pastoral care, anchoring them in faith and community care far away from home.
A Message of Victory to the World
The conflicts of this world stripped me of my home and property, and societal persecution drove me away. Yet, the Gospel of Jesus Christ gave me an everlasting joy, unshakeable peace, and a global platform to serve. My story began in severe struggle, but it has turned into a testimony of success and victory in Christ,” says Pastor Sushil. “My only prayer is that anyone who reads this testimony—whether they are broken, weary, living as migrants, or facing persecution—will find true hope and eternal rest in Jesus Christ.”
No matter how shattered the past may look, Pastor Sushil Bhatta’s life stands as living proof that when God’s grace and purpose are at work, no earthly storm or geographical border can hinder His calling.
